The skin cells have the mission of keeping tissues in good condition, synthesising the necessary elements from the extracellular matrix and giving the epidermis its unique barrier-effect properties. These hundreds of thousands of cells that form the epidermis descend from a small number of supercells that produce them every day; these are the skin's adult stem cells.
These stem cells are more resistant and protected than other cells, but are also exposed to factors that trigger premature ageing, and over time, their capacity to generate new healthy cells is reduced. Consequently, the loss or deterioration of the functions of this specific group of stem cells, due to age or external agents, causes a deficit of epidermal cells. Without these epidermal cells, the extracellular material cannot be synthesised and the skin's functions become impaired, and in particular, its capacity to self-regenerate effectively following traumatisms (cuts, burns,...) which is a characteristic that is only found in the skin of babies.
